September is Poly Cystic Ovarian (PCOS) Awareness Month, a time dedicated to starting conversations about PCOS and raising awareness of how it affects women’s lives.
What is PCOS?
PCOS is a common hormonal condition that affects around 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. It can influence the way the ovaries work and is often linked to hormonal imbalances. While PCOS is common, it can look different for everyone, which is why awareness and education are so important.
Common Symptoms of PCOS
Not every woman with PCOS will have the same experience, but symptoms can include:
- Irregular or absent menstrual cycles
- Difficulty with fertility
- Acne or oily skin
- Increased hair growth on the face or body (hirsutism)
- Thinning hair on the scalp
- Weight changes or difficulty managing weight
- Fatigue or low energy
- Mood changes such as anxiety or low mood
How PCOS is Diagnosed
Because PCOS can present in different ways, diagnosis usually involves a combination of:
- A discussion of symptoms and medical history
- Blood tests to check hormone levels
- An ultrasound to look at the ovaries
A healthcare professional will usually confirm a diagnosis based on a combination of these findings, as well as ruling out other possible causes of symptoms.
Why Awareness Matters
Because PCOS looks different for every woman, it’s often misunderstood or missed. Awareness means more women can recognise the signs, seek support earlier, and feel less alone in their journey. It also helps family, friends, and workplaces better understand the challenges women with PCOS may face.
Supporting Yourself with PCOS
There’s no “one size fits all” approach, but many women find that focusing on their overall health and wellbeing can make a difference. This may include:
- Nourishing food choices (non-starchy vegetables and fruits, lean protein, healthy carbs and low-fat dairy)
- Regular movement that feels good for the body
- Mindfulness or relaxation practices to reduce stress
- Connecting with supportive communities or practitioners
The important thing is finding a balanced approach that works for your unique body and lifestyle.
